Many Chicago plastic surgery patients have benefited from Dr. W. John Bull, Jr.'s, expertise and talent with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The eyes are the first feature that people notice when they look at a person. If your eyes make you look older than you are or make you look tired or angry, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Procedure

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess eyelid skin, muscle and fat that gives the eyes a tired, puffy appearance and will minimize the bags under the eyes.

Having this procedure will give you a more rested and younger look. The incisions that Dr. Bull usually uses are outlined in these drawings. The excess skin and muscle are removed and the incisions heal in the natural creases of the eyelids so that they are nearly invisible.

Other procedures can be added to change the shape of your eyes if this is indicated, and Dr. Bull will be happy to discuss these ancillary procedures with you. Eyelid surgery can be performed in combination with other procedures like a facelift or a brow lift to further enhance your results.

The procedure can be done as an outpatient using either local anesthesia with sedation or if combined with other procedures, general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure is from one to three hours.

As with all surgical procedures, there is some discomfort, but many people have said that it was surprisingly minimal and usually requires very little pain medicine to control. Other things to expect after surgery include itching, bruising, swelling and some lid tightness, as well as blurry vision and sensitivity to wind and light. These are considered normal postoperatively and usually resolve in one to three weeks.

The common risks associated with this procedure include infection, bleeding, eyelid tightness that may prevent the eye from closing completely and ectropion. Ectropion is very rare but is described as a pulling down of the lower eyelids that may require further surgery to correct if it does not resolve.

After eyelid surgery the patient must not wear contact lenses for two weeks while the incisions heal. Dr. Bull usually prescribes a special ointment for the incisions for the first week and may also ask you to use eye drops to keep the eyes moist while healing. Most patients can resume reading in two days and several patients have returned to non-strenuous work in three to five days. Strenuous activities may be resumed in two weeks.

The surgical results usually last many years and in some patients they are permanent. This procedure can make a tremendous improvement in the patients look and in certain cases improve their vision.
