Dermabrasion resurfaces the skin by removing the upper layers of skin allowing the natural healing process to stimulate a new healthy skin layer to form with a smoother surface. The skin's top layers are removed by a high speed rotary diamond tipped wheel. Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin scarred by accidents, previous surgery, acne or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth.
It's also sometimes used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses. It is not necessary to treat the entire face if the scar is localized to a small area.
The Best Candidates For Dermabrasion
Men and women of all ages, from young people to older adults, can benefit from dermabrasion, although older people heal more slowly. If you have freckles, they may disappear in the treated area. Also, if you have acne in an active stage, Dr. Bull will not perform this treatment because of a greater risk of infection. You must also not take accutane for at least six months prior to the treatment.
The Procedure For Dermabrasion
Although the procedure time depends on how large an area of skin is involved, the procedure is short. The procedure may be performed more than once, or in stages, especially when scarring is deep or a large area of skin is involved.
During the procedure, the outermost layer of skin is removed with a high speed rotary wheel with a diamond tipped burr. The scraping continues until the safest level is reached that will make the scar or wrinkles less visible.
Dr. Bull will treat the skin with ointments to prevent infection and speed healing evenly to give an excellent result.
