Collagen
Just below the epidermis lies the second layer of skin, the dermis. The dermis is primarily made up of a protein called "collagen". This protein forms a network of fibers that provides a framework for the growth of cells and blood vessels. Because it is the primary component of the dermis, collagen acts as the support structure for the skin.
Why do lines and wrinkles appear?
In young skin, the collagen framework is intact and the skin remains moist and elastic, resistant to our facial expressions, as well as everyday wear and tear. Over time, the support structure weakens and the skin loses its elasticity.
How does Collagen Replacement Therapy work?
Collagen Replacement Therapy replenishes the skin's natural collagen. The natural appearance of your skin may be enhanced as the contour of the support structure is restored. Zyderm® and Zyplast® Collagen are natural substances that replace the collagen your skin loses over time.
Derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen, Zyderm and Zyplast Collagen are placed just beneath the skin where the body commonly accepts them as its own.
By supplementing your skin's own collagen, Collagen Replacement Therapy helps to smooth facial lines as well as most types of scars. From this proven, non-surgical treatment, you may obtain immediate results. You can have your Collagen Replacement Therapy during a lunch hour.
How many Collagen treatments will I need?
Just like your natural collagen, injectable collagen begins to lose its form and will eventually wear down. Full correction occurs and is maintained only with a series of treatments. Depending on age, skin condition, and amount of sun damage, your treatment program will be tailored to incorporate your individual needs.
Introduced 18 years ago, Zyderm® and Zyplast® injectable collagen implants have set the standard in filler materials for smoothing facial lines, wrinkles and scars and in providing lip border definition. Treatments supplement the skin’s natural collagen, require minimal procedure time, and provide immediate results. Today, more than one million people worldwide have been treated with Zyderm® or Zyplast® collagen implants.
Zyderm and Zyplast implants are composed of highly purified bovine dermal collagen that is dispersed in phosphate buffered physiological saline containing 0.3% lidocaine.
Zyderm and Zyplast implants are indicated for the correction of contour deformities of the dermis in non-weight bearing areas. These implants have been employed successfully in many areas of the body to correct distensible acne scars; atrophy from disease or trauma; glabellar frown lines; nasolabial folds; rhinoplasty, skin graft or other surgically-induced irregularities; and other soft tissue defects.
Zyderm and Zyplast implants are produced in various formulations, which are appropriate for different facial areas and conditions.
Zyderm 1 implant is used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, shallow scars and thin-skinned areas.
Zyderm 2 implant is used to treat moderate lines, wrinkles and scars.
Zyplast implant is used to treat pronounced lines and wrinkles, scars, and thicker-skinned areas.
Patients experience immediate, visible results. Treatment with Zyderm or Zyplast implants is an easy and effective way to smooth lines, wrinkles, scars, and to define the lip border. An immediate, visible difference in the patient's appearance may be achieved in one treatment session.
Four weeks prior to the procedure, Collagen Test Implant is administered intradermally into the volar forearm to determine if a patient has a sensitivity to the implants. Ninety-seven percent (97%) of men and women tested can be treated with Zyderm and Zyplast implants.
If a patient is eligible to receive treatment, Zyderm and Zyplast implants are implanted intradermally through a fine gauge needle into the appropriate facial planes needed for correction. Treatment with Zyderm and Zyplast implants consists of a simple in-office procedure that can be completed quickly and conveniently, even during a lunch hour. Most patients return to their normal routine immediately following the procedure.
An ongoing series of customized treatments can preserve the look that is desired. These treatments are as easy and convenient as the first one.
Zyderm® and Zyplast® implants, introduced in the early 1980's, remain the most widely used, safe, and effective choices for smoothing lines, wrinkles, scars, and for defining the lip border. More than1 million treatments in over 40 countries have been administered with Zyderm and Zyplast implants.
Rigorous clinical trials to determine the safety and efficacy of Zyderm and Zyplast collagen implants were conducted from 1976 to 1981. This data was submitted to the Food and Drug Administration and Zyderm and Zyplast implants were cleared for marketing in 1981 and 1985 respectively. No other injectable collagen implants currently on the market have undergone such extensive study.
