Advantages of Using Laser in Liposuction Procedures

Lasers have permanently changed the cosmetic industry, and this amazing technology is now being adopted into countless procedures including liposuction. Not only do lasers make these surgeries safer, but they also improve the results and reduce the recovery time. With laser-assisted liposuction, you could sculpt the body you have always wanted and be back on your feet within days.

A Look at Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that is carried out to remove localized body fat from areas such as the thighs, abdomen, and upper arms. This surgery is generally needed when a patient has come close to their ideal weight but cannot eradicate stubborn bulges. Unfortunately, many healthy people have a difficult time achieving their ideal body no matter how hard they exercise or what dietary changes they make. Liposuction is a great option for patients who would like to jump those last few hurdles and finally be confident in their own skin.

This procedure is both safe and effective, but there are a few drawbacks to traditional liposuction. In some cases, patients must undergo a second procedure to tighten the loose skin that has been created by the absence of fatty tissue. Other patients would like to avoid the bruising, swelling, and lengthy recovery time. Laser-assisted liposuction helps tighten the remaining skin, cauterize damaged blood vessels, and liquefy the fat before it is extracted.

The Benefits of Laser-Assisted Liposuction

There are quite a few reasons why so many patients and surgeons prefer laser-assisted liposuction over traditional liposuction. The biggest benefit of this technology is that it is much less invasive. During a traditional liposuction procedure, a metal rod known as a cannula is used to remove pockets of fat with suction. While effective, this technique is hard on a patient’s body. The trauma to the surrounding soft tissue lengthens the recovery time and increases the risk of scarring.

During laser-assisted liposuction, the fat is emulsified before it is removed from the patient’s body. This means the surgeon can make smaller incisions and use a thinner cannula. The laser also cauterizes the surrounding vessels, and that results in less bruising and discomfort following the appointment. A procedure that originally took two or more weeks to recover from now requires just a few days to recover from.

The Day of Your Surgery

Instead of carrying out the procedure under general anesthesia, most laser-assisted lipo treatments require nothing more than an oral sedative and topical anesthetic. Patients need to do very little to get ready for their surgery other than wear comfortable clothing and have a loved one ready to take them home. We also ask our patients to avoid aspirin and tobacco products as they can interfere with the recovery. Once the procedure is complete, you should plan on resting for at least one full day. After that time, most patients can return back to work as long as their job is not too strenuous.
