Saline vs. Silicone Implants for Breast Augmentation

If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your breasts, implants can give you the full bust you desire. However, deciding what type of implant to receive can be a challenge, especially if our surgeon has advised you that you are a good candidate for either saline or silicone.

A Natural-Feeling Breast

Silicone implants do very well with women who have very little breast tissue of their own to cover the implants and are usually indistinguishable from natural breast tissue. It is usually the implant of choice because it lacks any seams or ridges.

Perfect Symmetry

For women who are considering an implant in just one breast because their chest is asymmetrical, a saline implant could usually the better option. This is also true for women who have notably mismatched breasts and want implants in both breasts to achieve a larger, symmetrical bust. Saline implants can be filled to meet the patient’s individual needs, while silicone implants come filled to standard sizes. If you need precise sizing to correct imbalance, saline may be the better choice.

Incision Size

Ask our surgeon about his insertion technique and scar placement if you are concerned about the size of the incision.

Rupturing Considerations

No matter how careful you are or how skilled your surgeon, ruptured implants happen occasionally. With saline implants, the rupture is obvious within a day or two because your body will absorb the sterile saline and naturally dispose of it. The implant will deflate quickly and there is no guesswork to be done.

Silicone implants, on the other hand, can ‘silently’ rupture, leaving you to wonder if the size, shape or feel of the implant is normal or if something has gone awry. If you have any concerns that you won’t notice a rupture due to your active lifestyle or the large size of your breasts, saline may be the better fit for you.
