Alleviating Back, Shoulder and Neck Pain with a Breast Reduction

If you are a woman with excessively large breasts, it can take a toll on your body. The weight of your breasts could explain why you have been struggling with chronic pain in your back, shoulders, and neck. Migraines and numbness in your hands have all been linked to the strain that can be placed on your body due to ample breasts. You are carrying extra weight that is not in proportion with the rest of your body, causing an imbalance that can be debilitating, keeping you from enjoying your life to the fullest. Breast reduction surgery could be the solution for you.

What is involved in a Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction is performed by Dr. John Bull. It is generally performed on an outpatient basis and general anesthesia is used during the procedure. Incisions are made on the breasts and the size is reduced by the removal of tissue and skin. Liposuction is often used in order to remove excess fat. In some cases, an excess of fat in the breasts may be the source of the problem and liposuction is the only necessary procedure. If necessary, the doctor may perform a breast lift as well to address any issues with sagging breasts. The incisions are closed and healing begins.

What to Expect during Recovery

After your breast reduction is over, your incisions will be dressed with bandaging. You may be provided with a surgical bra. Drainage tubes may be necessary to deal with fluids, including blood that is discharged after the procedure. It is advised to wear a surgical bra at all times for several days after your breast reduction in order to relieve pain and reduce swelling. You can expect to be sore for at least a week after your procedure. We can also prescribe medicine for pain relief.

Be sure to follow all instructions concerning restrictions with physical activity. You should refrain from any heavy lifting or strenuous activities immediately after your surgery. Plan on staying home a couple of weeks before returning to work. If your job involves strenuous activity, you may need a month of recovery at home. You may become more active a month after your procedure. You should wear a supportive bra, listen to your body, and ask for advice about what you are able to do at this point in time. As with any surgery, there is always a risk of infection. If you develop a high fever, intense pain, swelling, and discharge of fluids, be sure to contact your doctor.
