Masculine Look
Gynecomastia is a common condition that can occur in males of all ages, causing the development of breasts. It’s often triggered by hormonal changes or an imbalance of hormones, genetics, obesity, or the use of certain recreational drugs and prescription medications. Gynecomastia surgery from the Naperville-based John Bull Center for Cosmetic Surgery—also known as male breast reduction surgery—is a cosmetic procedure to flatten and enhance the male chest contour. We strive to deliver the best gynecomastia surgery Naperville has to offer. The surgery restores a firmer, more traditionally masculine look to the chest.
While surgery is a lasting and effective solution for this condition, there are many reasons gynecomastia can develop, so getting a proper diagnosis is important before starting any treatment plan. In some cases, changing medications or simply waiting for hormones to balance out after life changes can help to resolve the problem.

Gynecomastia is a condition associated with excess localized fat, problematic excess glandular tissue development, and excess breast skin. It may affect one or both breasts. Although it can resolve on its own over time without treatment, it can cause men to feel self-conscious and may be difficult to cope with. Some men may even avoid certain activities in public—such as swimming at a pool or the ocean—because they don’t want to show their chest. If the gynecomastia persists and non-surgical methods haven’t worked, they may choose to have surgery to correct it. Note that while gynecomastia itself is not a serious condition, it can potentially be a sign of more serious underlying medical problems.
Surgery for gynecomastia has a high satisfaction rate and can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life. Although losing weight can sometimes help to minimize enlarged male breasts, even very slim patients may still suffer from the look of breasts because they have excess glandular tissue. Gynecomastia surgery includes the removal of excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue.

Natural & Proportionate-Looking Chest
Gynecomastia surgery is generally a straightforward procedure that can involve one of two main techniques. It is often treated with liposuction for fat reduction, but the procedure may also involve surgical tissue excision. During liposuction, incisions may be made on either side on the chest, in one of several areas depending on a range of factors.
Excess fat and glandular tissue will then be removed to sculpt a more natural and proportionate-looking chest. For more severe cases of gynecomastia that cause stretched, sagging tissue, the glandular tissue and skin may need to be surgically excised. General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation will be administered. Sometimes the surgery may combine liposuction with direct excision of the excess breast tissue.

View MoreThe Right Fit For You
You may be an ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery if your appearance hasn’t improved through the use of other medical treatments, you are in good health and don’t have any life threatening illnesses that could interfere with healing and increase the risk of surgical complications, you are a non-smoker and non-drug user, you have a positive outlook and realistic goals, you are at a healthy and stable weight, your breast development has stabilized, and you are bothered or concerned about your appearance.
Other Options
Other forms of cosmetic surgery can enhance the overall proportions of the body by reducing excess skin, fat, or both. Liposuction is available as a standalone procedure to sculpt other areas of the body by removing subcutaneous fat. A tummy tuck can remove excess skin and fat or tighten weakened muscles on the abdominal area.
The discomfort after male breast reduction is usually minimal, but patients may experience some soreness that can be managed with prescribed or overthe-counter pain medications. Naperville gynecomastia surgery patients may be instructed to wear a compression garment to reduce discomfort, control swelling and bruising, and promote healing. There will be a few days of recovery time required if only liposuction is used to reduce enlarged male breasts, but if surgical removal of tissue is involved, the recovery may last between two to four weeks. Patients should avoid heavy physical activity for several weeks as they heal.
There will be significant improvement to the contours of the chest right away after gynecomastia surgery. The results are lasting, but it will be important for the patient to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Gaining significant weight can change the newly sculpted chest contours
Board-certified and highly accomplished plastic surgeon Dr. John Bull is not just committed to providing beautiful cosmetic surgery results in a safe and comforting environment. He also wants every patient to feel heard, understood, and confident in their choice.
