Cryosurgery for Skin Cancer Treatment

Cryosurgery is a medical procedure that uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to freeze and safely destroy tissues on the body. While cryosurgery can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, it is most effective when treating external cancerous tumors. This makes cryosurgery a great treatment option for skin cancer. In addition to non-melanoma skin cancer cells, cryosurgery can also be used to treat precancerous skin growths before they get any worse.

A cryosurgery skin cancer treatment usually begins with a local anesthetic being applied on the skin. Once your skin is numb, liquid nitrogen will be applied to your lesions using a cotton swab or aerosol sprayer. The cold temperature of the liquid nitrogen will kill the cancerous skin cells almost immediately. The skin will become crusty and will fall off on its own in the following few weeks. An antibiotic dressing may be applied to the treated area to ensure you are able to heal properly.

You can expect to experience some redness and slight discomfort on your skin while the treated area heals. Keeping the area clean and dry at all times will speed up the healing process. You should be completely healed in three to six weeks. However, it all depends on your unique situation. New skin tissue without cancerous cells should be fully formed once you are completely healed.

Cryosurgery has been proven to have a cure rate of 99 percent for skin cancer patients. As you can imagine, this is very high. While cryosurgery is an extremely effective treatment option, it is usually only used to treat certain patients. You will only be able to get this form of treatment if it is the first time you have developed skin cancer in the treated area.

If you have a bleeding disorder, then cryosurgery will be your only option for skin cancer treatment. Since there is no cutting involved, there is no risk of excessive bleeding.

Skin cancer can be an extremely dangerous disease if you do get treatment in a timely manner. There is no reason to risk having the disease spread to other parts of your skin when it so easy to fix your problem with cryosurgery. It will only take a few minutes to get treated, and then you can begin living your life without dangerous skin cancer lesions.
