What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite, or dimpled skin that resembles an orange peel, is a common problem among people of all shapes and sizes. Some may think that cellulite is synonymous with being overweight, but this is incorrect. While fat does play a part, cellulite has more to do with the quality of the skin than with the number on the scale.

Each little dimple represents a place where a tough connective strand of collagen is pulling down on the surface. These bands, known as septae, cause subdermal fat cells to be segmented, and the larger the cells are, the more they crowd each other and push outward. This creates areas that “bulge out” around the septae’s connection points. The problem is more dramatic for patients who have thinner, less elastic skin, whether due to genetics, age, sun damage, or other factors.

How Do Cellulite Treatments Work?

Since dimpling is the result of tension caused by the interplay of collagen bands, the skin’s surface, and fat cells, losing weight to make the cells smaller can help—but won’t solve the actual problem.

For years, companies have been releasing creams and lotions that claim to be effective cellulite treatments. And for just as many years, consumers have been frustrated to discover that these topical cellulite treatments don’t work.

The key is breaking up the fat cells, releasing bands that cause cellulite dimpling, or both—ideally without surgery. While there are specialized blades that can sever the septae, Dr. John Bull chose to offer two minimally invasive cellulite treatments that use focused energy instead.

VaserShape

Developed to be on its own or in conjunction with Vaser LipoSelection, VaserShape is a cellulite treatment that smooths out unsightly mild to moderate lumps and bumps for a tighter and firmer look. The non-invasive procedure combines ultrasound and massage therapy to address the tension caused by large and crowded fat cells.

First, heat generated by the ultrasound waves warms the connective tissue, redistributes the fat, and encourages local blood circulation. Then, lymphatic massage helps open the lymph nodes to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid through the body, which flushes away excess fats and toxins. The result of this cellulite treatment is a more smooth and even appearance.

Dr. Bull’s highly trained aesthetician uses a special handpiece to follow the contours of your body and target the areas of dimpled tissue with ultrasound energy at a specific depth (one to five centimeters below the surface of your skin). You will likely feel a slight warming of your skin during this cellulite treatment, followed by a sensation similar to a deep tissue massage.

We recommend scheduling a series of weekly cellulite treatments for optimal results. The specific number of sessions depends on the body areas that need to be treated. Many of our patients see a visible improvement in the appearance of their dimpling after a single cellulite treatment, with more noticeable results after three to five sessions.

After a VaserShape cellulite treatment, you will be able to return to your normal routine right away. Your skin may look pink and feel warm for a few hours, but this is due to increased blood circulation in the treatment area and will quickly resolve on its own.

Cellulaze

Cellulaze is one of the most effective cellulite treatments available, because it targets the bands that cause dimpling. By delivering laser energy directly under the skin, it achieves three things: It improves the thickness and elasticity of the skin by triggering healthy collagen production, it releases the fibrous bands that trap the fat and pull the skin down, and it reduces or removes the pockets of fat that push up around the bands.

Cellulite treatments with Cellulaze are not painful. Local anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area so patients only feel mild pressure when the device is activated. Dr. Bull makes tiny incisions (no bigger than the tip of a pen) and inserts a cannula containing the unique Cellulaze laser fiber. The laser releases energy that liquifies the pockets of fat, releases the fibrous bands, and stimulates the production of collagen to improve the quality and elasticity of the skin.

After this cellulite treatment, patients may feel a little sore and see some bruising, but these side effects should dissipate quickly. Results may be visible after the first cellulite treatment and will improve over time as more healthy collagen develops to thicken the skin itself, but multiple treatment sessions may be needed in order to achieve your aesthetic goals. Most medical spa patients should expect to see a reduction in the appearance of their cellulite. Treatment results can last for as long as the patient continues to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Cellulite Treatments in Western Chicago?

While technically anyone can develop cellulite, it is primarily a cosmetic problem that women deal with. The way fat tends to be distributed and stored in the female body creates conditions ideal for dimpling on the legs, thighs, and buttocks. An estimated 90 percent of women will develop cellulite to some degree.

The best candidates for cellulite treatments are those who have mild to moderate amounts of cellulite on common trouble areas, who follow a healthy lifestyle, who are near their ideal goal weight, and who have realistic expectations for the cellulite treatment.
