Improve Quality Of Life

Gain a More Alert and Youthful Look with Blepharoplasty for Naperville and Western Chicago

Your eyes are typically one of the first features that people notice when they look at you, so if the condition of your eyelids makes you appear older than you are, or makes you seem tired or angry, you may be a good candidate for an eyelid lift at Naperville’s John Bull Center. Western Chicago-area men and women who have noticed unwanted changes to their eyelids over time, or who have always been dissatisfied with the look of their eyes, can get satisfying results from experienced plastic surgeon Dr. John Bull. He strives to deliver the best eyelid lifts Naperville has to offer. An eyelid lift may apply to one or both upper lids, one or both lower lids, or any combination of the above. Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can be strictly cosmetic, but it can also help to improve quality of life for patients whose vision is partially obscured by a drooping lid.

Aesthetic Goals

What Does an Eyelid Lift Address?

While some people have naturally droopy eyelids, many others watch as their eyelids change over time due to a loss of elasticity and structure. While youthful eyelids are generally symmetrical and open as widely as desired, gradual collagen depletion and cumulative ultraviolet radiation damage can create both aesthetic and functional problems. As skin grows lax, it is less able to hold an elevated position. Gravity pulls it down, which leads to upper eyelids drooping above the eye itself and lower lids pulling away and sagging. Upper lid drooping can create a constant look of being tired, while lower lid sagging can expose the lower portion of the eye and lead to dryness. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is primarily focused on removing the lax eyelid skin from the upper and lower eyelids, tightening them and allowing them to look and function as they did in a person’s youth. For some patients, an eyelid lift can also involve removing or reshaping the weakened muscle and migrating fat that give eyes a tired and puffy appearance.

Additional Reading

The procedure can also minimize physical bags under the eyes, but patients should note that it does not help to reduce dark “circles” that contribute to a look of tiredness. This coloration problem is due to blood vessels visible beneath the thin skin below the eyes, and there are non-surgical solutions that can help. Because every person’s situation is unique, Dr. John Bull will meet with you to assess the state of your eyelids and discuss your goals before setting any eyelid lift specifics. This is also a good time to discuss insurance. While medical insurance companies typically will not cover eyelid lifts performed for cosmetic reasons, they may cover the procedure if it is being done to address vision issues.

Specific Goals And Needs

How Does an Eyelid Lift Work?

Dr. Bull can perform an eyelid lift on an outpatient basis using either local anesthesia with sedation or—if the surgery is combined with other procedures—general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure is from one to three hours, depending on the patient and any specific goals and needs.

During the eyelid lift itself, Dr. Bull will make incisions along the lash line for the lower eyelids and in the natural crease near the middle of the upper eyelids as necessary. In the upper lid, the incision allows him to remove redundant skin and tighten the lid so that it sits in a more elevated position. The lower-lid incision also allows him to excise loose skin, as well as to remove and redistribute fat and muscle. These incisions are meticulously placed not only to give Dr. Bull the access he needs to complete the eyelid lift, but also so that any resulting scars will be difficult to spot months later after they heal.

Realistic Goals

Who Is a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift in Western Chicago?

Most of our Naperville eyelid lift patients choose this surgery to gain a younger appearance and a more attractive look. Blepharoplasty produces the best results for patients who are non-smokers and do not have pre-existing health issues that may hinder healing.

It is also important that eyelid lift candidates have a realistic idea of what the surgery can do and have reasonable goals when it comes to improving their appearance. Dr. Bull will go over specifics during the consultation, which is when you should explain what you are hoping to get out of the blepharoplasty procedure and ask any questions you have so that you feel ultimately confident in your decision. Coming into an eyelid lift with the knowledge of how it will impact your appearance, as well as a thorough understanding of what will come after, can reduce stress levels. This, in turn, can make healing and recovery a quicker process.

Other Surgeries

What Surgeries Are Available Beyond an Eyelid Lift for Western Chicago?

Eyelid lifts can be performed in combination with other procedures—such as facelifts for shaping the lower portion of the face and brow lifts for smoothing out the forehead—to further enhance your results. There are also other treatments available that can impact the look of your eyes. BOTOX®, for example, relaxes specific muscles in the eye area to smooth out crow’s feet, which are thin wrinkles in the skin that appear when you squint or smile. Doctor Bull will be happy to discuss such minimal and non-invasive procedures with you during your eyelid lift consultation—or any time.

What Is Recovery Like After an Eyelid Lift?

After eyelid lift surgery, patients must not wear contact lenses for two weeks. This allows their incisions to heal properly. Dr. Bull usually prescribes a special ointment for the blepharoplasty incisions for the first week. He may also ask you to use eye drops to keep the eyes moist while healing. We find that most eyelid lift patients can resume reading two days after their procedure, and some patients have returned to non-strenuous work in three to five days. For our Naperville blepharoplasty patients, strenuous activities may be resumed about two weeks after the procedure.

What Eyelid Lift Results Can Be Expected?

Results from an eyelid lift can be expected to last for many years. While skin will continue to age and be impacted by the environment, the benefits of an eyelid lift can last for life for some patients. There will be some initial bruising and swelling after blepharoplasty surgery, but once these effects resolve, the eyelids will appear in a more typically youthful position. The overall effect will be a more open, rested, and alert expression, as well as an improvement in symmetry for patients who had one eyelid that sagged more than the other. Patients whose upper lids encroached on their field of vision will find their view of the world improved after blepharoplasty.
